FARMHOUSE. 1400s WITH 1800s ADDITIONS, GRADE 2 LISTED. MAIDSTONE, KENT
This 6-bedroom farmhouse, a classic blend of traditional architecture and modern extension, presented a unique challenge: to seamlessly merge the old and new sections of the house. The goal was to create a space that is both comfortable for a growing family and a stunning entertaining space for the homeowners.
To achieve a harmonious blend, we stripped the walls back to the brick and rebuilt them using traditional lath and lime plastering techniques. Rounding the corners and edges softened the lines, creating a more organic aesthetic that complemented the original structure.
The modern extension, featuring a bespoke "beamed" ceiling, serves as a striking visual bridge between the old and new. This design element adds a touch of drama and warmth to the space, creating a seamless transition.
To further enhance the connection between the two sections, we designed and crafted custom joinery throughout the house. All the windows and doors were custom-made to complement the architectural style. A bespoke oak kitchen, inspired by the beamed ceiling, serves as the heart of the home. The kitchen is designed to be both functional and stylish, perfect for entertaining guests. Additionally, we designed and supplied fitted wardrobes for all five bedrooms, offering ample storage space and a sleek, contemporary look.
By carefully considering every detail, we've created a timeless family home that blends the best of both worlds. The project demonstrates how historic buildings can be adapted to modern lifestyles while preserving their original character.
