HISTORIC THATCHED COTTAGE: FROM NEGLECTED TO CHERISHED
THE BRIEF
A neglected thatched cottage required complete renovation to become a welcoming holiday home. The project demanded structural improvements, space reconfiguration, and thoughtful interior design to preserve its historic character while creating modern comfort.
OUR SOLUTION
Upstairs, we reimagined the layout to add a bedroom, using a reclaimed elm door frame to create a partition that feels original to the house. Traditional materials were central to the restoration - walls received lath and lime plaster finished with clay paint, while black beams were stripped back to reveal their natural beauty.
Each bedroom gained its own identity. The Spice Room features a bespoke bed with integrated tables, designed to suit the room's angles. We uncovered and restored a hidden chimney breast and staircase, adding authentic charm. The Green Room centres around a restored brick fireplace crowned with a reclaimed elm beam, while the Sunshine Room maximises space with custom bunk beds and storage.
Throughout the cottage, aged-oak doors with beeswax ironmongery and wide floorboards bring warmth, complemented by industrial lighting that creates both airy and intimate moods. In the compact shower room, zellige tiles and a stone shower tray blend rustic charm with modern luxury.
THE RESULT
A holiday home that honours its heritage while offering contemporary comfort.
