SURREY INSPIRATIONS
Despite being so close to London, Surrey can seem like a world away. With quaint villages sitting happily next to large bustling towns, great schools, and the largest amount of woodland in any county in England, it’s a popular choice for families.
Surrey families are in the unique position of still being able to pop into London to enjoy the art galleries and museums, but also living a lovely lifestyle of walks and pub visits, much closer to home.
Here are some places that we like to visit when we need to be inspired.
THINGS TO DO - RHS WISLEY
RHS Wisley is a firm favourite with families and garden lovers. Wisley is the flagship garden of the RHS and one of the UK’s most visited and best-loved gardens, attracting around one million visitors each year. Some 75 garden staff, 25 students, four apprentices and 100 volunteers help make a day at Wisley an amazing experience for visitors.
Key highlights throughout the seasons include The Glasshouse, Rock Garden, Bowes-Lyon Rose Garden, The Mixed Borders and the newly-created Exotic Garden. Seasonal must-sees include a carpet of crocus in spring, blooming rose collection in summer, magnificent autumn colour and a crisp Winter Walk.
A full programme of family-friendly events also run throughout the year, such as a Spring Craft Fair, Family Gardening Festival, Wisley Flower Show and Christmas Glow.
THINGS TO DO - DENBIES WINE ESTATE
Denbies Wine Estate, near Dorking, is also a must-visit for wine lovers. The Denbies Estate, based in Dorking, Surrey, has been family owned and run since 1984. Denbies vineyard was planted in 1986, and since then has become one of the largest wine producers in the UK. Denbies core business is agriculture and they are pleased to be able to offer visitors an insight into wine production in the UK. Denbies wine now competes on an international level, including multiple gold awards for sparkling wine production, the first ever gold for an English rose wine and most recently an international gold for Denbies Noble Harvest Dessert wine.
THINGS TO DO - WATTS GALLERY ARTISTS' VILLAGE
Watts Gallery - Artists' Village is a unique Arts & Crafts gem nestled in the heart of the Surrey Hills, in the picturesque setting of Compton on the edge of Guildford. Discover stunning Victorian paintings and sculpture in the historic Watts Gallery before treating yourself to lunch or a cream tea in the Tea Shop. Wander to the nearby Grade I listed Watts Chapel, taking in the beautiful woodlands and grounds, or find out more about the lives of G F and Mary Watts at Watts Studios before taking a tour of the artists' home, Limnerslease.
